Solar Panels
At Gaia Energy, we provide free or subsidised solar panels to households that are eligible for the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) Scheme. Whether you’re a homeowner or tenant, switching to solar could mean lower energy bills, greater energy independence, and a reduced carbon footprint.
What Are Solar Panels?
Solar panels are devices that convert sunlight into electricity for your home. Made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, they capture the sun’s energy, even on cloudy days, and turn it into usable power to run the lights, appliances and heating system in your home.
Installing solar panels on your roof generates clean, renewable electricity that helps reduce your reliance on the national grid. This means cheaper utility bills and a lower carbon footprint, all while making your home more energy efficient.
Under the ECO4 Scheme, solar panels are often installed as part of a wider home energy upgrade. Combined with elements such as insulation and efficient heating, solar technology can significantly cut your energy bills. Whether you’re looking to save money, reduce emissions or simply modernise your home, solar panels are a smart, sustainable move.
Why Consider Solar Panels?
- Generate Your Own Renewable Energy – solar panels harness energy from the sun to power your home, reducing your reliance on the grid and helping you to save money on your energy bills
- Low Maintenance, Long Lifespan – once installed, solar panels require little upkeep and can last for 25 years or more
- Environmentally Friendly – reduce your home’s carbon emissions and support the move towards cleaner, greener energy.
Solar panels are silent, low maintenance and they work all year round, even on cloudy days. Once installed, solar panels start saving you money from day one.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity you can use in your home.
- Sunlight Hits the Panels – solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight shines on these cells, it creates an electric field that generates direct current (DC) electricity.
- Inverter Converts the Power – the DC electricity flows into an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC). This is the type of electricity your home appliances use.
- Power Your Home – the converted electricity is then used to power your lights, fridge, TV, and other devices. Any unused energy can be stored in a battery (if installed).

How to Find Out if You Qualify for Free Solar Panels
If you’re eligible for ECO4, you could receive fully funded or heavily subsidised solar panel installation as part of wider energy efficiency improvements for your home. This means you may also benefit from insulation and heating upgrades designed to make your home more energy efficient.
You may qualify for ECO4 support if:
- You receive certain government benefits such as Universal Credit or Income Support
- Your home has a low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating (typically D or lower)
- You meet income-based or other qualifying criteria.
